Sleep… Every Parents Wish

This was me before my kids were born… something had exhausted me to make me sleep on the dog bed

The hardest part of parenting is the lack of sleep. I can think of nothing about parenting that consumes you everyday. There are plenty of hard things that will come up from time to time but the lack of sleep is something that makes me feel like a hamster on a wheel with no end in sight.

I require 8 hours of sleep to be a functional person. I have learned to be a functional parent on less, meaning I have learned to drop some of the unimportant parts of being an adult so I can get more sleep.

Mom or Dad, adoptive parent or biological parent, nursing mom or b-feeding mom you need sleep and when you do not get it your metal acuity suffers, your mood suffers, your relationships with everyone suffer.

So something that is so fundamental to your physical and mental health is so important why is it so hard as a parent to get sleep?

You kids go to sleep late, wake up early, get up in the middle of the night, and the times that they go to sleep on time you use that new found personal time to do the things you long to do when the kids are not awake… so you end up staying up late anyway!

So the consistently hardest thing to do is get enough sleep.

Kids please when Mommy says she needs to take a nap or she wants to sleep late let me because I have been exhausted for three years in counting!

Isn’t that the truth?! There have been times I’ve been so exhausted that I have drifted in and out of reading a book aloud to my daughters. When they were younger, they would patiently wait and listen to the disjointed reading job.

Now that they are older, Sophia will sometimes say, “Mom, I can read the book. You sound tired.” Then sometimes I actually fall asleep and wake up a chapter or two later. Feel much better after that…though it makes me realize how tired I really am.

You truly you hit the nail on the head when you said the lack of sleep is one of the hardest things about being a parent!

  2. Definitely a challenge of parenting. It’s a challenge I don’t think one understands till they actually go through it.
    Hang in there.

Lack of sleep was so common, that I would forget what it meant to actually be rested. Even leaving the husband with the baby for a few hours didn’t help because nobody can do it like mom does it! Now that my children are older I’ve been able to get that much needed extra sleep. I guess that is my reward for having so many late/sleepless nights!

  4. The hardest part is getting sleep. I never regret my afternoon nap, If I can get away with it, as it allows me to be a better wife, parent and friend. I too require 8 straight hours of sleep or I turn into a bear.
